Connect your Nikon camera via USB-C

Connect your Nikon Z camera to FrameFast with a USB-C cable for live tethered capture. Your iPhone keeps its internet connection.

Supported models

The original Nikon Z50 uses Micro-USB instead of USB-C and is not supported for this connection method.

What you need

  • FrameFast installed on your iPhone
  • A charged camera from the list above
  • File format set to JPEG or RAW + JPEG — FrameFast does not transfer RAW-only files
  • A USB-C to USB-C cable
  • iPhone 15 or later (USB-C port)
  1. 1

Check USB settings (newer models only)

    On the camera

Most Nikon Z cameras work out of the box — just plug in and go. But if your camera has a USB settings menu, verify these settings:

    • USB Data Connection → MTP/PTP
Menu path: Network MenuUSB (or Setup MenuUSB on Z6 II / Z7 II). If you don't see this setting, your camera is always MTP/PTP — no action needed.
    • USB Power Delivery → Off
Menu path: Setup MenuUSB Power Delivery. Prevents the camera from draining your iPhone's battery.

Models without a USB Data Connection menu (Z6, Z7, Z5 1st gen): always MTP/PTP — skip this step entirely.

  2. 2

    Insert a memory card

    On the camera

A memory card must be inserted for tethered shooting to work. The camera stores the photo on the card and transfers a copy to FrameFast.

  3. 3

    Connect the USB-C cable

    Cable

Turn the camera on, then connect a USB-C to USB-C cable between the camera and your iPhone.

Your iPhone may show a permission dialog the first time — tap Allow to give FrameFast access to the camera.

  4. 4

    Open FrameFast and select Nikon

    On your iPhone

4.1 Open FrameFast → Capture tab → tap + → select Nikon → select USB Live Capture.

4.2 FrameFast detects your camera automatically. Tap to connect.

  5. 5

Pick an event and upload mode

    On your iPhone

Select the event you’re shooting for, then choose an upload mode:

    • Real-time upload — photos upload to the cloud as you shoot. Requires internet.
    • Shoot offline — photos are saved locally and uploaded later when you’re back online.
  6. Start shooting

    On the camera

Every photo you take on the camera now appears in FrameFast and uploads to your event. Your iPhone keeps its internet connection while connected via USB.

Troubleshooting

FrameFast doesn’t detect the camera

  • Unplug and re-plug the USB-C cable.
  • Make sure the camera is turned on before connecting the cable.
  • Check USB Data Connection is set to MTP/PTP, not "iPhone". The "iPhone" mode is only for Nikon's NX MobileAir app.
  • Try a different USB-C cable — some charge-only cables don't support data.

Camera screen goes dark when connected

  • On newer models, go to Setup MenuUSB Connection Priority → set to Shooting. This keeps the monitor active. Not all models have this setting — on older models, half-press the shutter to wake the screen.

iPhone battery draining fast

  • Set USB Power Delivery to Off in the camera's Setup Menu. When enabled, the camera draws power from your iPhone through the USB cable.
